Arrow 8.5 Beta 1 Details and How to Feedback

Hello,

I'm delighted to be able to distribute the 8.5 beta driver for Windows:

DisplayLink software release 8.5 will deliver the following:
- DL-6xx0 performance improvements
- DL-6xx0 alternative encoder. Preview on selected platforms, enabled via registry key
- Other performance and reliability improvements

Details on the "alternative encoder"
This feature is used to offload encoding from the CPU, and when released, will give at least the same performance as what is available in production today.
The feature is not ready for public release and that is why a manual action is required to enable it.

Current requirements of the alternative encoder
- Windows 10 Anniversary Update onwards
- USB adapter or docking station using the DisplayLink DL-6950 ASIC
- Intel GPU
- AlternativeEncoder registry = true (see below on how to do this)
Any other display connected through DisplayLink technology will still use be rendered the same way as before (DL-1x5, DL-3xxx, DL-4xxxx, DL-5xxx).

Limitations of the alternative encoder for the beta and 8.5 release
- Performance is NOT in scope. We expect about 20 fps. The reason is well understood and performance will be addressed before the feature is enabled by default in a future release.
- Only DisplayLink DL-6950 ASIC currently going through alternative encoder.
- Intel GPU 5th generation and above are scoped to be supported but the beta will also work on older GPUs. Your feedback will determine if we validate older GPUs or not. I'm currently running it on my Intel 4th generation successfully.
- Other GPUs are not supported or even tested. Do not enable the registry key for them.
- Supported resolutions up to 4K, no tiled displays.
- No support for content protection.

How to force enable the alternative encoder
In Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DisplayLink\C ore
Create new "string value" name=AlternativeEncoder data=true
If you are uncomfortable with Regedit, in an elevated command line, you can create that key by running the following:
REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\DisplayLink\Core /f /v AlternativeEncoder /t REG_SZ /d true

The change will only take effect at the next connection of the USB device.

How to remove the alternative encoder
In Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DisplayLink\C ore
Delete the "AlternativeEncoder" entry.
If you are uncomfortable with Regedit, in an elevated command line, you can create that key by running the following:
REG DELETE HKLM\SOFTWARE\DisplayLink\Core /v AlternativeEncoder
Confirm by typing Y, then ENTER.

The change will only take effect at the next connection of the USB device.

How to give feedback
For this to be manageable, please create a new thread with each piece of feedback you have.
Any type of feedback is useful to us, not only linked to the alternative encoder which is only developed here because it is new!
