Angry Black screen with sound when attempting to watch live video

I am no longer able to watch live video such as DAZN or fubo. I simply get a black player screen with the stream's sound playing. Not sure why this happening?

Default This is unacceptable

I've been using a Display Link with a 2018 MBP for 1 month with no significant issues until yesterday when the same thing happened to me:

I went to watch Rings of Power on Amazon Prime and was met with a black screen whilst the audio played in the background.

I thought I was going mad, I tried Chrome, Edge and Safari to no avail. After hours of googling I've found that it's tied up with HDCP, essentially Apple are preventing people from broadcasting paid media...

What a useless product. Off I go to Amazon to give this 1 star...

Make sure to complain enough that displaylink gets this fixed, or better yet complain to apple and make them give us more that 1 display output

I had this happen to me, with a black screen with sound when trying to stream. I discovered it's because DisplayLink requires "screen recording" turned on in settings for Macs. Once I unplugged my monitors from my MacBook Pro, the stream began playing with picture and sound on my laptop screen.

I'm not sure why DisplayLink needs screen recording, but that seems to be the culprit.

For some reason, it only affects some streaming services. For example, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount Plus and MLB.TV don't work right (i.e. sound only, black screen), while Hulu and YouTube are fine, streaming both picture and sound.

Default Try turning off hardware acceleration in the browser

In another thread, users disabled hardware acceleration in Chrome or Firefox and were able to watch the video.

It appears the issue is with the way Apple processes displays in the hardware graphics pipeline vs. software. Somehow when the "Screen Recording" API is used, something with HDCP kicks in and prevents the video from displaying, but only when being processed in a particular way? It's a little confusing but we'll probably get a clean fix for this in, oh...a few years?

Been researching this for a whilst and found this forum link to stop HDCP protected content from displaying a black screen but hearing audio from streaming services such as Netflix and Disney.

Disabling Hardware Acceleration only works for me on Google Chrome but not Firefox.
Streamed video content is now displaying Google Chrome.
I can live with this for the moment.
Thanks so much

Specs:
Macbook Air M2
macOS Ventura 13.0
DisplayLink 1.8.0
Dell D6000 dock
Dual Monitors
Chrome 107
Firefox 106

Default Disabling Hardware Acceleration resolved the issue in Chrome, for now.

This resolved my issue on a Macbook Pro Mid 2015 model with Monterey 12.6 on Chrome Version 107.0.5304.110 and DisplayLink Version 1.8.0. I never had this issue (Black screen but still have Audio) with Firefox. However, when not connected to the DisplayLink dock, I had no issues with Chrome.

Do we know if DisplayLink is working on this issue?

Any update on any fixes ?
