Default HDR not available on external monitor

Hardware: MacBook Pro M1 2020, Samsung LU28R55 4K monitor, DisplayLink 4K Plug and Display Dock connected to my MacBook via USB-C.

Issue: when I plug my external monitor directly into my MacBook with a DisplayPort to USB-C cable, the HDR toggle appears as an option for the external monitor in System Settings > Display and I can watch videos, play games etc in HDR on my external monitor . However when I connect the external monitor with a DisplayPort cable to the DisplayLink dock, there is no HDR option/toggle in System Settings > Display and I cannot watch HDR video on the external monitor. I also tried using an HDMI 2.1 cable to connect the monitor to the dock to see ion that solved the issue, but it did not. Any suggestions on how to get HDR to work?

Hello,

Unfortunately in MacOS platform the devices using DisplayLink technology do not support HDCP. Streaming services like iTunes, HBO, Amazon Prime, Netflix or Disney+, YouTube TV, Udemy etc. are using HDCP protected content. Which means that they will not work. This is currently one of the DisplayLink limitations. In those cases the video would remain black while audio is still playing.

Due to limitation on our end it is expected that this feature does not work. If you are using browser to watch those streaming services we get feedback from many users that it is worth checking other
browsers, many that were using Chrome have success with Firefox now. I hear that also changing the hardware acceleration settings in the browser helps.

To the best of my knowledge, at this time products currently available based on DisplayLink technology do not support High Dynamic Range (HDR) content.

My impression is that the DisplayLink response above misinterpreted the question to relate to High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) as opposed to High Dynamic Range (HDR)
