Default Crashes using skype

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
HP dv7t-3000 laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M
eVGA UV195 drivers 5.4.25778.0
I'm driving a Samsung 1920x1080 via the laptop's HDMI, also using the laptop screen, and also driving a 19" 4:3 Hyundai using the eVGA DisplayLink adapter.

I'm getting very regular crashes while using Skype for Windows 4.2.169. Definitely bad crashes while using skype video, even when the skype application is not displaying on the DisplayLink monitor. I'm also crashing when using normal voice skype with no video at all.

I've googled, and found some older release notes from 4.X releases of DisplayLink where it is mentioned:
Skype video is believed to be unreliable with Vista. It may cause
crashes (no bug number).

Skype video does not work on DisplayLink screens with Windows XP. This
is because Skype video uses VMR9, which is supported by DisplayLink
software on Vista WDDM, but not on Vista XDDM or on XP. Trying to use
skype video on XP may cause black screens or freeze the DisplayLink
attached screen. (1651)
I'm guessing this is still an issue, as I'm suffering from it. Here's the output from my Event Log:
Faulting application name: Skype.exe, version:, time stamp: 0x4bebfa84
Faulting module name: dlumd32.dll, version:, time stamp: 0x4c20b0de
Exception code: 0xc000000d
Fault offset: 0x0002877b
Faulting process id: 0x2420
Faulting application start time: 0x01cb2a99457c9b07
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\dlumd32.dll
Report Id: a13cedef-968c-11df-9737-00269e9fffac
My question is: Is there any workaround to avoid these crashes, short of yanking my eVGA DisplayLink adapter out of the USB prior to making a skype call? That's my current workaround and it's, well, less-than-desirable.
