Default Ubuntu 16.04, D1000 Docking Station, displaylink-driver-1.1.62

I installed the new display link driver on my Dell XPS13 running Ubuntu 16.04. I am using the Dell D1000 Docking Station with a HanStar Display.

The old driver actually worked on the XPS13 running Ubuntu 15.10. Unfortunately 15.10 was too flaky to use. I think the flakiness was part of the reason the display link driver was able to detect the display. Under 15.10, the D1000 was probably misidentified as a D3100.

Anyway, I have attach the zip file from the support tool.

If display link developers don't have a D1000 available, I can work with them. I don't think this will be a hard problem to fix.

There is no sign of evdi kernel mode driver being loaded.
Was the DKMS build successful during the installation?

Michal

Disable secure boot and restart the system. Unfortunately, the driver was not signed, so the kernel module won't load when secure boot is in effect.

Alternatively, sign the kernel module yourself. Steps should be similar to those mentioned in https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/que...-on-fedora-20/

See also how people solve this for VirtualBox, which also have DKMS-built kernel modules.

Default Turning off secure boot

Turning off secure boot in the BIOS solved the problem. I will probably try signing the driver later.

The first time the system came up after secure boot was turned off, I got the following error when I tried to configure the display settings.

Cannot open “Display” settings, error “Could not get screen information”

Doing the following --

sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop

-- and then rebooting solved that problem.

Below is the output from lsusb. I believe I saw two DisplayLink drivers when I used the old driver with Ubuntu 15.10.

algotrader@algotrader-XPS-13-9350:~$ lsusb

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
algotrader@algotrader-XPS-13-9350:~$

The sound settings are somewhat confused, but I doubt that problem has any connection with the display link driver.

Default Could not get screen information

After the multiple displays began working, I could not configure them because settings>hardware>displays responds with "could not get screen information".

I googled this problem and generally the suggestions involved invoking the following.

sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop

This proposal may help accidentally, but after sorting out the various variants of gnome and experimenting, it seems that "settings>hardware>displays" is actually looking for appearance information, which has been removed from settings in the latest version of the gnome desktop configuration system.

If one clicks on the desktop background to get a menu including change desktop background and then clicks on change desktop background, appearance configuration pops up, and then one can choose "all settings" at which point displays works, and one can configure the multiple displays.
