Default AOC e1649fwu switching off and on while watching videos

Hey there.

Have been experiencing this issue for almost a year now, usually I just ignore it but I realised that after tolerating this issue for a year, I should get rid of it once and for all so I'm asking for help here.

The issue happens when I watch videos, be it graphic intensive HD videos or even 480p 1990s comedy not even in fullscreen. My e1649fwu would switch off, then my main monitor will switch off as well, then both will reboot back up again and then the moment i start watching the video again. It does the same thing over and over. The way I tolerated this was to just stop multitasking and watch the video on my main monitor, but that means that my USB monitor would be all for nothing.

Hello,
DisplayLink doesn't make any end product so I have a few questions for you to understand the behaviour you are experiencing.
1. Is there a splash screen when the monitor is first plugged with a logo?
2. Is the splash screen reappearing when it restarts when playing the film?
3. What type of cables is used between the computer and AOC monitor? How many USB plugs does it have, approx. length?
4. Do you have the issue on any USB port of the computer?

This sounds like a power related problem. Hence my questions focused on this.
But if you have other information, please do share them.

Kind regards,
Alban

1. No there is no splash screen when its first plugged into the usb. It just switches on and becomes my second monitor.
2. What splash screen am I looking out for? When it restarts, it turns black completely, after a few seconds it switches on again as if I plugged it into the usb.
3. The cable is just an ordinary usb that came together with the AOC monitor.
4. No issues on the USB port whatsoever.

I notice that this is happening on random intervals when I boot up my computer. Sometimes the monitor never even screws up, and other times it will screw up all the time until I restart.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi Diab,

Generally with these monitors, the issues reported are power related.
Would you have an externally powered USB hub to try it through?
Wasn't the monitor supplied with a special USB Y-cable to get power from two USB ports?

1,2. Some manufacturers add a logo in their monitors which is displayed when the monitor boots up.
The fact everything goes down and then goes back up like you describe makes me believe the monitor is short of power... So it works mostly when it doesn't have much to do, and then fails as the demand increases or the port current delivered slightly decreases over time.

Kind regards,
Alban

I would advise to plug both, yes.
It could be interesting to flag the lack of clarity to AOC so they update their documentation, if you don't mind...
