Default USB adapter won't work after Windows 7 install. Please help!!!

Hi, I've been using a DisplayLink USB 2.0 adapter for the last three years when I was running Windows XP, no problem. But recently I had to upgrade to Windows 7. I was surprised to find that when I tried to install the adapter it would no longer install. I just keep getting an incompatibility error and the install shuts down. I tried downloading some later software but same problem. The latest software tells me the USB device is incompatible with my onboard Nvidia hardware. I can't understand this. How come it worked perfectly okay with the hardware under WinXP but now will not? Is it a case of Microsoft refusing to support the hardware for some reason? Or is it just a con to force us to upgrade our DisplayLink hardware? The silly thing about this is I got a message saying I should update my video graphics card. But if I update the card why would I even bother with the USB adapter???? Is there a solution, or is my USB adapter just another relic for landfill at the local garbage tip? If this is the case I won't be buying any DisplayLink hardware ever again.
