Phone to TV?

I have tried your basic USB to HDMI converter. Found out my phone needs to be HML capable, which it is not.

Through further research I see a YouTube video. The guy was enthusiastic about his tragus docking station. In his case he wanted to play videogames. I have multiple needs for this however.

I purchased a Targus dock, I plugged the HDMI cable and USB C to USB-A into the dock, and nothing.

I downloaded the display link adapter ap, still nothing Tried all of the USB ports (since they are not labeled) and the screen didn't even shake.

So I'm two transactions in. Should I just give up? Or is there something else I need to buy?
