Default HP ProBook 4320s + Samsung Syncmaster P2450 - no 1080p!

Hi there,

This is my config:

HP ProBook 4320s
USB Docking Station with DisplayLink software
Samsung Syncmaster P2450
Windows XP Professional

I have a HP 4320s Probook laptop with the external USB docking station (the horizontal one), as can be seen here:

When trying to connect my Samsung SyncMaster P2450 (24"), I can't get beyond the 1680x1050 resolution.


What I did:

1.) I tried connecting the screen through my analog port, directly from the laptop. 1920x1080 works like a charm
2.) I tried a shorter DVI cable - no change.
3.) I upgraded the DisplayLink software to 5.5 - no change.

NOTE: The DisplayLink software displays a maximum resolution of 1680x1050, if I right-click on the Display Manager in the taskbar.

Default Addition to prior post

I downloaded the debug tool and ran the system scan. Attached the output.

I might have forgotten to say, I ideally want to run one single screen (close the lid of my laptop) and just work on my Samsung screen.

Hi titushanke,

The reason why you can't get beyond the 1680x1050 resolution is that your HP USB 2.0 Docking Station doesn't support higher resolution. This is why 1920x1080 works like a charm when the screen is connected directly to the laptop.

USB 2.0 Docking Station is a DL-160 chip based product so in this case I can only suggest buying DL-165 or DL-195 based Docking Station.

Thanks for your reply. This is strange though, as the manual states that the docking station is FULL HD compliant:

Are you sure it doesn't support HD? In this case, I will file a complaint with HP.

So I contacted HP to ask whether the data in their manual is incorrect, given the answer by the DisplayLink team.

Here is the answer:

Thank you for contacting HP e-Solutions.

This email is with reference to the case number: 7025001 for HP ProBook 4320s Notebook PC.

According to your e-mail, I understand that you would like to know the resolution support on this unit.

Titus, according to the model number I see that this unit supports up to 1920 x 1080 resolutions on supported
DVI 1.0 compliant.

If the issue persists then please contact your nearest HP service center to get this issue fixed.


So basically I am back to square one:

- DisplayLink says it can NOT do 1920x1080
- HP says it CAN do 1920x1080

Hi titushanke

OK - I've double checked this again and you definitely have a product based on the DL-160 from your logs.

The USB Product ID is 0x01D4. This was used for the DL-160 docks. PID 0x01D6 was used for Docks based on the DL-165. Also the FW Lib version is 0109 on your device. The DL-1x5 chips were not supported until FW version 0210.

I think HP support are assuming that you have the latest dock, based on the DL-165, which would support this resolution. I'm using our contacts with HP to correct this and find a way users can identify between the 2 different versions.

Thanks a lot! While this doesn't help me in achieving what I wanted to, I hope that this thread will help others who face similar issues.
