Default Any comment on when portable USB 3.0 monitors will appear? [Updated]

Hi DisplayLink,

(Update: See my comment below re MB168B+)

Can you offer any guess about when portable USB 3.0 monitors will start appearing?

Some non-portable options have started appearing via Google search:
* ASUS MS248B 24" with resolution 1080x1920
* HannsG HU193 18.5″ with resolution 1366x768 (seems low)

A portable USB 3.0 display with resolution 1080x1920 or better of between 14" to 17" would be ideal.

I wonder if Lenovo will pick it up -- they seem to have struck the exact right balance this time around with ThinkVision LT1421 (1366x768 @ 14" looks like the best that can be done with USB 2 -- AND portable form factor).

AOC have announced a 22" version: http://hothardware.com/News/AOC-Intr...y-USB-Monitor/

It does get hard to bus power the backlight much bigger than 14" though, although the USB-IF Power Delivery Specification will help with that http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/read/...to-100w/019432

However, that won't stop people from trying to squeeze all they can from the unmodified port. Expect more announcements soon.

No, that'd be worse!

I'm not a fan of the AOC USB-display products right now -- that 16" 1366x768 monstrosity has pixels so big, you can see them from across the room

I was hoping for portable solutions with excellent pixel density.

i.e. between 14-17 inches -- so that the dimensions would roughly line up against a laptop screen of similar resolution and similar pixel density.

Okay, I've dug around a bit -- the AOC model is "e2251Fwu". It's slated to be USB 2.0 with 1920 x 1080 as a native resolution; maximum draw 10W (requires two USB ports) -- not sure how portable that will be, no weight/mass disclosed. Said to be thin. I'll have to wait to read a full review before figuring out if this is the right match.

I'm noticing now that there are rarely any displays under 22" that offer a resolution of 1080+. I think that in reality, this is going to be the main issue for manufacturers making portable displays of any kind -- if there's little demand for such extraordinary pixel density, then they simply won't be made.

Having said that -- rumours [such as they are] suggest that a 2012-Q2 MacBook Pro might support a 2880x1800 screen in either their 17" or 15" model. If Apple makes this happen, and the industry adopts -- then we might start seeing portable monitors with comparable resolution and pixel density.

(N.B.: I said 1800 not 1080.)

Time will tell, but I'm going to stop holding my breath

Hey everyone!

To answer my own question -- ASUS has released the MB168B+ -- a USB 3 (1920x1080) display at 15.6". It is more functional in Windows however, as the brightness buttons have been reported not to work in Mac due to some proprietary EzLink software (ASUS) not being ported. Other than that, it's another sure win and I'm probably going to upgrade (Hahah! Christmas 2014) from the Lenovo LT LT1421 (1366x768) for travel!

NB Make sure you look at the MB168B+, not the MB168B -- the plus means 1080, while vanilla is 1366.

Here is the product page from ASUS:

Here are some reviews:

Toshiba aslo relelased a 15.6 monitor quite a while ago. I'm still using their usb 2.0 one and I'm pretty happy with it (except on Mac)

The Toshiba model is only 1366x768 -- same as the Lenovo I have.

The final factors for me deciding to go with Lenovo instead of the Toshiba was the price (was down at $160 briefly), power consumption (4.2W) and mass (2.3lb).

The Toshiba is still up around $220, and weighs half a pound more. Its power consumption has yet to be published anywhere

I missed out on the above Asus -- it was shipping at $180 over xmas, but is now up at $220. Next time!
