Workarounds for simple configuration?

I see lots of problems with Mac Os 10.9.2 and DisplayLink 2.1, but they all seem to involve multiple displays and adapters. I have a simple configuration, and I'm wondering if somebody's managed to get it to work.

MacBook Pro with Henge dock connected to one DisplayPort display and one USB DisplayLink display.

Without the DisplayLink software installed, the DisplayPort display works fine.

When I install the DisplayLink 2.1 software, the system can't boot. I push the button and hear the tone, but the display stays black. It doesn't matter if the USB adapter is plugged in or not.

If I undock the laptop and open the lid, the internal display works.

Is this a total fail??
