Default Second monitor not any more detected

I have two new Lenovo T590 notebooks and I connect them through an i-tec Thunderbolt docking station to two old HP LP2465 monitors (resolution 1920x1080). I knew that the Thunderbolt connector is not supporting two 4K monitors, but these old monitors should work.

And they did: one computer with Windows 10 and the other with Ubunti 18.04 - great!

Now I installed a lot of software on both computers for my work - all not connected to the external monitors. And what a bad surprise: the Ubuntu computer recognizes only one monitor - and the mouse pointer flickers horribly.

The flicker went away with the first workaround on this page: https://support.displaylink.com/know...ent-x-upgrades, but still - only one monitor is recognized.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the displaylink driver several times - no effect.

I was using the version from the i-tec website, but I see that it seems to be exactly the same as on this displaylink site: version 5.2.14.

Any further ideas about what I could try?

Because: It HAS WORKED a few days ago, so SOMEHOW it should be possible to get back to this situation!

Of course I continued trying.

Having also xorg crashes, I googled also for that one. And found hints to update the kernel - but this did not change anything: "you have already the most recent..."

However, before doing it I thought it might be safe to uninstall the displaylink drive again - and then I re-installed it of course. Expecting that nothing can be done at the moment but switching where the monitors are plugged into the thunderbolt dock: so far I had from left to right first one monitor working, then one black, and then the notebook builtin screen, and I wanted to have the working monitor next to the notebook.

But after switching - what a surprise: now both monitors are recognized again!

So one more hint that MIGHT have had an effect: both monitors have a "good old" DVI connection cable, while the dock has for both possible monitors both a HDMI and a Displayport connector. For one of the monitors I already had an old Displayport adapter, and for the other one I bought a HDMI connector.

Before they were plugged in as follows:

monitor 1: Displayport
monitor 2: HDMI

In that case, only the Displayport connected monitor was recognized.

Now I have switched to

monitor 1: HDMI
monitor 2: Displayport

and this seems to be the better option!

Does this make any sense?

Ok, for me the most important thing is that it is WORKING now! ;-)

I'm on similar situation: ubuntu 19.10. no kernel, no xorg nor nvidia driver updates. I'm using last displaylink driver.

yesterday it was working, but today, monitor using displaylink doesn't work any more at the same time that the built-in hdmi one.

Some tip o clue?
