Third-party cables for USB-C DL dock?
Long story short:
I have this dock: https://www.x-kom.pl/p/446039-stacja...kaAk_-EALw_wcB ...and tried those cables with it: https://www.speckable.pl/pl/product/...60-czarny-0-5m https://www.x-kom.pl/p/675447-kabel-...w-10-gbps.html None of them transfer any video (they only charge the laptop). The original cable included with the dock does work. Please, don't ask me why I need third-party cables instead of sticking with the OEM one. Also, don't suggest contacting the manufacturer, I've already done that and they're not very helpful ATM. Reasons? |

USB-C cables not working with DisplayLink dock

I have a very similar dock from i-tec for DisplayLink
https://i-tec.pro/de/produkt/cadua4kdockpdl-3/ I can use the genuine USB cable delivered with and also other cables for Thunderbolt 3. No problems. This dock delivers video for monitors only on the ports for DisplayPort and HDMI on the backside. You can use only one output per Zone (Zone 1 or Zone 2). For example Zone 1 DisplayPort and Zone 2 HDMI. This dock can't do USB alternate mode on the ports for USB on the front side. So you can't connect monitors to the USB ports. And very important! You have to install the driver on the host machine you connct to the dock via the USB host cable to. Either for Windows or macOS. Only with ChromeOS the dock works natively without driver installation. For me too. Check your driver installation on your host machine and use the cable which came with the dock. Use the most recent driver from DisplayLink. It is much better than the previous ones. I have a cable Thunderbolt 3 from DeLock I connect the dock to the port Thunderbolt 3 on a Apple iMac 2017. No problem. Last edited by AW_DisplayLink; 01-31-2022 at 10:46 AM. Reason: my secret |

Thanks a lot for replying. Recent follow-up:
it turns out my dock was/is defective in some way. It's been exhibiting some really strange behaviour as illustrated by this video I've recorded for a support rep from i-tec: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVyk...annel=ekhangel After recording the video and after a twentyth-or-so full reset of the dock it suddenly started working with any cable I have - despite the one original USB-C cable that it came with and that I have apparently damaged. With this cable, the dock gives the horrible lag shown on the vid. All in all, it's a complicated and really boring story to an "outsider". But thanks for your feedback. |

Yes, it's complicated and confusing.
Be aware that cables can be active. They have chips inside the plug. They make handshakes and exchange the capabilites (of the cable!) with the other side. The chips inside the cables also mark these active cables. For example as a cable for Thunderbolt 3. Is the port on your laptop Thunderbolt? Is Thunderbolt firmware and drivers installed on your laptop? So your laptop thinks with Thunderbolt cable attached that it should be Thunderbolt, but the dock i-tec is not Thunderbolt capable. Try to deactivate Thunderbolt on your laptop if present. |
