Is that new behaviour with 8.5 or has it been like that since Windows 10?
Would you be able to check which Windows 10 build number you are using?
(In Command Prompt, run VER and it will spit a 10.0.x.y. I would welcome x and y.)

It sounds like the nVidia driver goes down thinking there's no display connected.
That shouldn't happen on such a recent graphics driver.
