I did delete the service file as root. I completely uninstalled and rebooted and reinstalled many times. The result is always:

# systemctl status displaylink.service
● displaylink.service - DisplayLink Manager Service
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/displaylink.service; static)
   Active: inactive (dead)
