Does anyone have a fix or suggestions?
Here is my Ubuntu configuration.
I am using a Dell D1000 docking station.
I tried without much hope the suggestion at the following URL.

The suggested changes did nothing to prevent the freeze.
Most of the time I just unfreeze the display with the following command.
killall -3 gnome-shell
Gnome never freezes if the login is on the 2nd display attached to the D1000 docking station.
