I did try changing my graphics adapter from the Mobile version to the Highperformance version in System Preferences. So far it seems to be working. Not sure why this would make a difference but food for thought.
Oh, and now my battery life sucks ... C'est la vie

Yes, using the higher performance option solves many issues, because the system just use the high-end GPU instead of sharing a context between the GPUs. Unfortunately this has impact on battery life.We do hope Apple will fix the problem soon.
