Just a follow up, I bought a Digitech XC-4973 from a local supplier which specifically refers to DisplayLink folder on the installation media. I installed the Ubuntu driver, restarted the machine, logged in, attached the USB device and the Monitor and it works perfectly.
No link to the device but the name quoted above is as per the packaging.
