6950 issues with dell U2412MC

The firm I work for have hundreds of 6950 powered Hewlett Packard universal docks(gen 1 and 2) and we keep having intermittent issues with our Dell U2412MC monitors. Each dock is connected to two of these monitors via display port cables. The monitors resolution keeps reverting to 640x480p and we are unable to change it via display settings in windows. The only fix we have found is to re-plug the display port cables any ideas for a more permanent solution would be ideal.
