Hello,
This would probably be because, when you have your laptop display panel enabled, it is used as the primary display (the one with the system tray icon next to the clock).
If, on the same layout, you change the primary display to be one external displays, then you would most likely see the problem again.
As Intel only fixed recent platform drivers, your workaround is unfortunately the only way many, like myself, have.
