The problem affects more than just Chrome....

The problem affects more than just Chrome. SecureCRT, Gnome Terminal, Sublime are also affected just not as obvious as Chrome.

I upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10 with unity, displaylink barely works.

1) Chrome is so sluggish on displaylink screen. It works fine on every other screen
2) x-org crashes a lot

I switched to gnome 3.18 by installing...

I switched to gnome 3.18 by installing ubuntu-gnome-desktop, cpu utilization barely changed

I don't think switching from Unity to Gnome made any difference. When I browse something like Google...
