Just did an experiment. I timed how long the Sound Settings took to display once clicked in System Preferences. Exactly 60 seconds.

That sure seems like a timeout to me.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the DisplayLink driver, rebooted and it seems to have fixed it.

Weird. Can't even remember the last I had to reinstall a driver on a Mac...
