How does Windows do it?

Especially with a variety of Video cards from NVidia, ATi, Intel and AMD

It may help fix it for DisplayLink :)

Always worked with Windows XP onwards and DVI on PC

These displays are made by Silicon Graphics and have always - as in every single time - worked with every version of Windows from XP onwards when connected to the PC's...

Is there a way to get the DisplayLink driver to be manually set with the appropriate EDID information?

Or at least 1600 x 1024 @ 60Hz?

VESA Standard - Yes, No, Maybe

You are correct - 1600 x 1024 is missing from the page to which you linked

And Silicon Graphics who sold monitors at this resolution say that 1600 x 1024 is a VESA standard and Apple's 22" Cinema...
