High CPU Load and no Taskbar with W10.1703 when Taskbar is automatically turned off

Hi,

right after the Upgrade vom Windows 10 1607 to 1703, I was not able to see the Taskbar anymore. There was only an artifact of the Taskbar left and the CPU was running in circles. When plugging off the Docking station, everything was back to normal.

I went into the Taskbar settings and made it fixed / not going away automatically. This way the Taskbar shows always and I have no problem. But as soon as I set the taskbar to go away automatically (so you need to touch the lower part of the screen to get it back), the issue comes back.

Workaround is to show the Taskbar 100% of the time.

I upgraded to the new drivers from April 18th, but it did not change anything yet. Windows has all current Updates from the last patchday too.

I suppose since many people have their Taskbar up for 100% of the time, there are not many people with this issue. But itīs reproducable here always and only happens with the Docking station connected.

Kind regards!

Hello RBM,

I've got Windows Creators Update official release with 8.2 M1 with three DisplayLink displays.
My idle CPU is identical in both auto-hide and always on taskbar.
Could you give us a bit more on what you mean by high, where is your taskbar, the machine type? I must have something different running what you have.

There were taskbar issues with Anniversary Update, but Microsoft fixed them with the Creators Update. Apart from the mouse pointer, DisplayLink driver doesn't have the possibility to know about objects: we get composed pixels.

Kind regards,
Alban

Hi,

thank you very much for asking those questions. I was sure my post was missing some vital information, but I was not sure what :-)

Iīm using a Surface Pro 3 with the Kensington SD-3500v, one Monitor is on the DVI port, the other on the HDMI port. The Surface screen is always on, so itīs basically a triple screen setup.
The Desktop is expanded over all 3 Screens. The external Screens stand side-by side, the Surface is below them and in Windows I also have that arrangement (see my screenshot, 2+3 external 1 = Surface).
The Taskbar is configured to slide out in Desktop mode and itīs configured to only show up on the Primary Screen which is the one on the top left.

I did not have issues with the Anniversary Update (apart from the mouse lag issue in the very beginning which Displaylink fixed with its driver updates over time :) ).
Right after the Creators update I was not able to get into my Taskbar once it slided out. CPU usage goes up (see screenshot) and I canīt get the Taskbar back. I had to unplug the USB dock and then in the Windows settings I permantently enabled the Taskbar to fix the issue.
While the taskbar is hidden, there are artifacts of the task bars outer border shown and they flicker like thereīs an attempt to show the Taskbar and hide it again. Unfortunately itīs not possible to Screenshot this (I tried it several times, but a Screenshot always shows a clear picture).

All this is not happening when I make the Surface the primary screen (while the 2 externals are still connected) and only show the Taskbar on that one. Then it slides in and out as it should and I donīt see the CPU utilization you can see in the Screenshot. As soon as I make one of the external Displays the primary, the problem comes back.

I hope this helps to reproduce the issue I have. If you need any further information, donīt hesitate to tell me. Iīll try to get whatever you need.

Kind regards :-)
