DisplayLink on HP Zbook with Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS with Dell Docking Station D3100

I am unable to make a HP Zbook notebook recognize the displays attached through a Dell Docking Station D3100.

Steps taken:
  1. install Ubuntu 14.04.03 LTS Workstation
  2. sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  3. sudo apt-get install dkms
  4. download the installation script from http://www.displaylink.com/downloads/ubuntu/
  5. unzipped it
  6. sudo sh -x ./displaylink-driver-1.0.335.run
  7. plug in the docking station
  8. reboot
  9. log in
  10. System Settings -> Displays still only shows the Built-in Display.

The kernel is 3.19.0-49 -generic. (I have an earlier version of the DisplayLink driver working on a Dell Precision laptop with Ubuntu 14.04.1 and I've had to be picky about the kernel used; it s 3.16-51 there.)

Switching to the NVIDIA driver (which boosts resolution to 1920x1080) doesn't help.

I'm stuck now.

I will attach the ZIP-file produced by sudo ./DLSupportTool once I know how.

Are you on proprietary drivers for the built-in GPU by any chance?

Except that it did not work with the open source driver, that's why I tried the NVidia driver next.
