Ethernet network adpter failing on Thinkpad basic docking under Windows 10

Hi everybody!

I've recently bought a Thinkpad basic usb 3.0 docking station which is apparently working with DisplayLink hardware inside.

:D The device works perfectly under Linux Ubuntu 14.04.

 Under Windows 10 everything is working but the ethernet network adapter (NCM). I tried whatever is found on forum and the knowledge base and the issue is still there. I see under the decive manager/DisplayLink NCM/device status:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Object Name not found.

But the drive is installed with the latest version. Reinstalling the driver and Enable/Disable switching did not work as well.

I will be happy to get some feedback in order to solve this issue.

Hello,
The device shouldn't be called "NCM" as this is the unbranded name.
This suggests the driver is blocked.

Do you have a network adapter in the list (even if non-functional)?

If not, are you using an end point protection software (McAfee, ESOD....) which blocks the creation of network adapters?

Finally, could you look in my forum signature to see how to provide me with the zip of the log files so I can look at them?

Kind regards,
Alban

Hi Alban,

Thanks for your reply. Attached you can find the zip file and two screen shots from device manager.

In the list there is an addition intel network adapter which, I guess, is the built-in one from my notebook.

I have Norton security and I can not find anything in it about end point protection.

Best,
Davood

Thanks for the logs Davood,

I believe it's what I thought. There isn't any DisplayLink adapter.
The antivirus/end point protection software is blocking its creation. I know it happens with the other two I mentioned but it looks like Norton does it as well.

Please disconnect the device, uninstall DisplayLink drivers, deactivate Norton, install DisplayLink drivers, plug in the device, reactivate Norton.

Then, you will see a new Ethernet adapter, and the entry in Device Manager will not mention NCM and probably something like Lenovo Giga Ethernet.

Kind regards,
Alban

Solved

Thanks a lot Alban!

It worked! Yes it was Norton. Now I can see the lenovo usb ethernet in the adapters list.

Very fast and helpful support.:):)

Best,
Davood

Dell Inspiron + D3100 LAN recovery

I had a similar problem when the 'Anniversary windows 10' was installed, and my LAN connection went away. I went through the same steps that Alban recommended (Except my Anti Virus is Windows Defender). My LAN connection came back but my Ethernet driver still shows 'DisplayLink Network Adapter NCM'.

Thanks Alban

Hey PapaCraig,

Would you have the log files, please? Only employees can download the zip files posted here.
I would like to see if there is an error with the device.

Kind regards,
Alban

DisplayLink Network Adapter NCM - code 39

I had the same problem when the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition update was installed. My HP USB Giga Ethernet was replace by the DisplayLink Network Adapter NCM driver which failed with a code 39 error. So I disabled real-time protection, which disabled Windows Defender, uninstalled the DisplayLink Graphics Driver software and the failing DisplayLink Network Adapter NCM device from Device Manager, then reinstalled the DisplayLink Graphics Driver software. At which point the HP USB Giga Ethernet device reappeared. Thanks Alban for a successful fix.
