1070 won't wake up

Hello,

got the problem, playing pubg sometimes I have low fps (~20), and sometimes high (>100).
I figuered out, that at low fps, the GPU clocks are in idle mode (608 MHz, 405 MHz RAM) even the load of GPU is 99% (taskmanager).

To "wake up the GPU", I have to enable the nativ screen of the laptop. nvidia control panal can be reached now (otherwise error appears, there is no GPU for nvidia) and the clocks rise to 1443 MHz, 4007 MHz.

System
Laptop, Asus GL502VSK, i7-7700HQ, nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB, Win10 64bit pro, DiplayLink Manager 8.5.3276.0, nvidia driver 391.35

Hello Lars,

Thank you for taking to post this.
I have a few questions to make sure I properly understand.

Do you know if that system is a dual graphics card (Intel iGPU for power saving and nVidia for the heavy lifting)?

Would you know if connecting a display on the laptop HDMI has the same effect as enabling the embedded display in getting the performance increase?

I would also like to confirm you have not enabled the registry switch for alternate encoding. nVidia GPU hasn't been looked at yet.

Kind regards,
Alban

I know, there is no other GPU inside. (That was one of the negative points I knew before buying this laptop.)

Yes, it has the same effect. Just tried.

I tried both ways.

There is another funny issue. Restarting windows helps too (high perfomance), while shutting down and starting again has no effect (low performance).

Thank you Lars,

Is that new behaviour with 8.5 or has it been like that since Windows 10?
Would you be able to check which Windows 10 build number you are using?
(In Command Prompt, run VER and it will spit a 10.0.x.y. I would welcome x and y.)

It sounds like the nVidia driver goes down thinking there's no display connected.
That shouldn't happen on such a recent graphics driver.

Kind regards,
Alban

The System has been Win10 from the beginning.

I'm kinda sure, at least since 8.3.
<8.3 I can't remember. (Playing LoL works with low performance. So there was no need to check, if something went wrong ;-) )

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.309]

update:
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.334]

now.

Still the same issue.

Lars
