User-mode Driver Crash - Event ID 10111
1 Attachment(s)
I have several thousand universal docking stations deployed for 2+ years using the Displaylink 3900 chipset running Win 10 and various revs of the displaylink driver (mostly v8.3M1) and the implementation has been stable for the most part. We are recently seeing intermittent disconnects on a handful of units.
The dual external monitors will disconnect, and the network connection will drop, and they won't come back unless you unplug the USB 3.0 uplink cable and reconnect it. It will continue to work normally for anywhere between 10 minutes to several days, and then it re-occurs. In the Windows event logs I see critical errors for "user-mode driver crash" event ID 1011. problem in one of the user-mode drivers. Hosting process has been terminated. " Humanscale ethernet internal error event ID 5005" "humanscale ethernet has begun resetting NDIS ID 10400" Hardware reset. Driver detected that the hardware stopped receiving commands" I have tried the following without resolution: -Unistalled displaylink driver 8.3M1 with displaylink cleaner tool. Installed displaylink driver 9.1M1. -Updated Intel graphics driver to most current available. -Updated Intel wireless lan driver to most current. -Updated audio drivers to most current. -Updated Intel LAN adapter driver to most current. -Replaced Humanscale docking station, Power brick and USB 3.0 cable. I have attached support logs taken from one of the machines having the issue. Please take a look and let me know if you see anything that might be causing this. Thanks in advance. Attached Files |
Hi Dlong,
Thanks for getting in touch with us and sorry to hear of your difficulties with the recent intermittent disconnects. It looks like you've run through a lot of useful troubleshooting steps already, so thank you for that information. The only other thing I'd be curious about is whether if you have a docking station that is experiencing this issue, whether using a different laptop (that is working elsewhere) still shows the same issue. I understand that you've replaced the docking station, so it's unlikely to make a difference, but I'm still curious. For us to investigate further, it looks like we're missing some logs from that which you have uploaded, which is usually caused by not running the log collector as administrator. You can manually collect these logs by going to C:\Windows\Temp\DisplayLink and upload all the files from that directory. Would you be able to do that from a machine that's having the issue so that we can look into this further? Kind regards, Andrew |

Thanks for the response.
I re-ran the support tool as administrator and also collected the files from the displaylink temp folder as you suggested. both are attached. Let me know if you see anything. Thanks, Del |
Hi Andrew.
Have you had a chance to look at the logs? Thanks, Del |
Me too...
I have a Plugable UD3900, which I understand uses DisplayLink drivers. It, too, hangs up (mouse/keyboard unresponsive; event ID 10111) every day or two. Most of the time, the laptop (Dell Inspiron 17 5000, Windows 10) comes back after about 20 seconds, but sometimes the 2 screens go black after 20 sec and then, after another 10 seconds or so, come back to life, but with all the windows pushed to the upper left corner of the main display. I was hoping the response from the DisplayLink Team would provide an answer. If anyone is still listening, please respond.

I'm also experiencing this problem several times a day. I give customer demonstrations, so it's not good to have this happening.
- Windows 10 1903 - DisplayLink 9.2.2335.0 - Plugable USB-C docking station - 2 month old Lenovo X1 Yoga I've attached files from the log gathering tool (run as admin), but did not do a remove / reboot / reinstall at this time. Event log (one 10110 and two 10111's): A problem has occurred with one or more user-mode drivers and the hosting process has been terminated. I would appreciate it if someone from Display Link would review and comment. Thanks, Del[/QUOTE] This is getting disturbing, as we have thousands of Lenovo Hybrid Docks deployed and these issues are starting to appear quite regularly, with no fix from Lenovo |
Hi,
Apologies for the lack of response on this thread, I'm not sure how I missed this for so long. I'm not sure if all of these are linked to the same issue, but there is a bug that is currently being investigated by our development teams that looks as if it may be the cause for at least some of these. It is triggered when the software has been waiting 10 seconds for an ACK of a USB transfer delivery to the dock, which then gets terminated by IDD afterwards. I am currently tracking this bug and following the developer comments as it gets worked on. I will endeavour to update the thread when I know more information. For all of you who are seeing this issue, could I ask you to head on over to DisplayLink's support site: https://support.displaylink.com/ and click the "Contact DisplayLink" button. You can use this to start a support ticket, which will then show us how many people are seeing the same issue. Kind regards, Andrew |
Hello Dlong,
I've escalated the case and we're in discussion with the manufacturer. Kind regards, Alban Ref 30803 |
Suffering from the same issue
I am also suffering from the same issue: The strange thing is that there are some days where the problem does not occur at all - some times it happens 3 times within 5 minutes making it almost impossible to work.
Setup: Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga X380 and the ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock. Notebook - Dock connection is via USB-C, 2 Displays attached to Dock via DP. I assume that the problem does not occur when connecting via USB-A but then my Notebook does not get charged anymore ... The symptoms: Mouse freezes, displays freeze ... after approx. 15 seconds they turn black and recover to normal operation within another 10 seconds. Interestingly: LAN connectivity, which is also handled via dock, stays working. If the problem reoccurs to often within a short period of time after the third attempt the external display stay frozen (showing the last screen) and do not recover. I have to open the notebook lid, as this is the only active display then, and disconnect/reconnect the dock again. Eventviewer gets flooded with the EventID: 10111 Source: DriverFrameworks-UserMode and the Text: The device "ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock" (Location "003e.0000.0000.001.002.000.000.000.000") is offline due to a user-mode driver crash. Windows will attempt to restart the device 5 more times. Please contact the device manufacturer for more information about this problem. ... for other German users: Das Gerät "ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock" (Ort "003e.0000.0000.001.002.000.000.000.000") ist aufgrund eines Ausfalls eines Benutzermodustreibers offline. Ein Neustart des Geräts wird 5 Mal versucht. Weitere Informationen zu diesem Problem erhalten Sie beim Gerätehersteller. Graphic-card drivers (Displaylink and Intels'integrated ones) are up to date. Firmwares (dock and Notebook) are also up to date. |
Error 10111 Lost of Video Problem
Like the previous reports, I am having the same 10111 error with the following message from the Event Viewer:
Quote:
As others report, the problem is intermittent. The monitor will periodically go black for several seconds and then return to normal video. There might be several of these losses of video within a period of a minute or two and then none for an extended period of time. Let me know if I can provide additional information Don |
Lenovo ThinkPad T480 BIOS update 1.36 solved this issue
Hi,
I also had this driver crash issue with my T480 and the ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock. Displays connected to the dock randomly went black and I had to disconnect/reconnect USB3 calble to fix this. I tried Displaylink beta -drivers, but they didn't fix the problem. Lenovo published a new BIOS update (1.36) for T480 and it contained the following fix: [Problem fixes] - Fixed an issue where monitors attached to Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen2 are disconnected when battery charging is reached to 100%. https://support.lenovo.com/fi/en/downloads/ds502226 I managed to regenerate the problem and updated BIOS. I haven't got any crashes after the update. Kind Regards, Mikko |
Loss of Video
I continue to have the loss of video problem I reported in my previous post, however the DriverFrameworks-UserMode Log no longer shows the driver crash error, although it continues to show other apparently normal events related to my ASUS USB monitor using the DisplayLink driver.
If someone can suggest a way to troubleshoot this intermittent loss of video, I would appreciate it. |
Then I would recommend you start a new thread with new behaviour and details, please.

I'm having this same issue with a new Acer XF270H monitor I bought. I've been running a Dell and AOC monitor with my D3100 DisplayLink device and Latitude 7290 with Windows 10 Enterprise for a year+ without any issues. I added a new Acer monitor, and almost immediately this problem starts.
The Acer monitor keeps freezing up and throwing the 10111 (when it's attempting to restart) and 10112 (when it gives up on restarting) errors, and both external monitors are disabled, leaving only the built-in laptop display functioning. USB devices on my D3100 that don't go through the DisplayLink chip (mouse, keyboard) continue to function after a brief hiccup during the disconnecting of the monitors. Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB 3.0 uplink cable restarts successfully, and then anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour later it happens again. Software-wise, I've uninstalled and then did a clean install/update of: - USB Root Hub driver - USB 3.0 Host Controller driver - DisplayLink core software - DisplayLink driver - Acer monitor driver - Intel graphics driver - Ran Windows update to ensure nothing else outdated Hardware-wise, I've tried: - Running just the Acer and Dell monitors without the AOC monitor (this was one of the first things I tried and everything since then has been tested with just those 2 external monitors to simplify things) - Connecting the Acer to my D3100 with HDMI-to-HDMI - Connecting the Acer with DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort - Swapping out the USB uplink cable between the D3100 and my laptop for a different one - Trying both USB 3.0 ports on my laptop - Running Acer and Dell monitors with and without the lid closed on the laptop Settings-wise, I disabled USB Selective Suspend when plugged in (as recommended by DisplayLink troubleshooting guide), and just blindly stabbing in the dark I also tried setting the refresh rate of the Acer down to 60Hz instead of the 120Hz it defaults to, and tried turning off FreeSync on the Acer monitor. The only thing I haven't done of the recommendations I've found is tried to update the BIOS because this is a work computer and they don't give us the BIOS passwords for our machines as a matter of policy, but it's not all that old - Dell 1.6 from August 2018. Our IT department doesn't support personal devices and peripherals so can't help me with this issue. I'm about to just return the monitor if I can't figure this out in the next day or two, but I'd rather avoid the hassle and get this one working if possible. Attaching the output from the Support Tool here. |
I'm suffering this error (10111) as well. Dell XPS 13, D3100 dock. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the DL drivers, installed every maintenance and driver download that Dell has to offer and still it happens. I have 2 external monitors - a Dell Ultrasharp 25" (at 2560*1440) and a Samsung 22" (1920*1080). I don't use the laptop monitor.
Both monitors go dark simultaneously, then he laptop hibernates (I think). Power goes off, I press the power button, the Dell logo appears, blinks off, comes back with the rotating wheel, and then either the monitors come on and I'm back in business, or only the laptop monitor comes on. All my apps are still running in either case. In the latter case, in Device Manager I disable all the Displaylink D3100 instances (there are generally 4 rather than 2) and re-enable them. At some point in this process the monitors come back to life and the number of D3100 instances goes back to 2. And of course Event Viewer shows 5 or 6 10111 critical events. Then for a variable period - up to 24 hours - it's fine, before it happens again. |
2 Critical Errors on startup
Add me to the list of affected users -- an ASUS MB168B+ connected to a Lenovo 460s with the latest BIOS and running Windows 10. Problems started after an OS update from version 1809 to 1909. The two DriverFrameworks-UserMode errors occur only at startup, causing at least a 45 second delay before the login screen displays.
The two errors in the Event Log occur in sequence:

we started to rollout new Devices (HP EliteBook X360 1030 G4). We discovered the same Issues that you guys discussed here. Same Eventviewer-Errors 10110 and 10111, same behaviour with a Freeze for the external Displays and a LAN disconnect. Connected USB-Devices are still available (for Example the keyboard). In addition, the Problem seems to occur more often, when there is a lot of Network traffic going on, like file transfers from a networkshare to the affected client or some downloads from the internet. Our Environment looks like this: Device: HP EliteBook X360 1030 G4 Dock: Lenovo Hybrid Dock (Latest Firmware installed) Displays: FUJITSU Display B27T-7 (connected via DisplayPort) Windows: Windows 10 1903 (with December Updates) We tried nearly every DisplayLink-Driver Version. The Versions directly from Lenovo, the problem is still there. The most recent Version directly from Lenovo is 9.3.2992. We also tried some older Verisons directly from Lenovo, same Problem. Also, we tried the latest Version directly from the DisplayLink-Website. Sadly, the problem still exists. We updated all Drivers on our HP-Notebook including the BIOS, chipset, Thunderbolt etc. The Problem is still there. Only workaround by now is to connect the Dock via USB-A to the Notebook. @AlbanRampon: You said, this Case is escalated. Are there any new insights about this problem? Thanks and best regards. |

Toshiba PA3927A-1PRP
I have long suffered with this issue for years, time to speak up !!!
DisplayLink device is Toshiba Dynadock PA3927A-1PRP. Computer Intel i7, 16 GB RAM, so computer power is not an issue OS is Win10Pro x64 fully updated Don't suggest any of these I have already tried it ! .... Replace Dynadock Multiple versions of driver from 8.1 to latest 9.3 M1, plus Windows Update driver Update Firmware Different computer Format/clean install Windows New USB cables, new monitor cables Adapter HDMI port to VGA Reset factory defaults several times Replaced all connected peripherals 2 monitors, mouse, kb, webcam, speakers If I connect all peripherals direct to computer, no issues |
Possible Fix?
Yesterday Lenovo released a new firmware for the USB -C Hybrid dock, wich can be found here:
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS504448 The changelog sounds promising as I have connected the external Displays via a DP to DVI Adapter: Cypress FW: [V0.2.68] 2019/11/13 1. Fixed external monitor attached on dock no display or light up slowly if connected through DP to DVI dongle(lenovo PN43N9159). 2. Optimize LED breathe more smoothly. Billboard: [BB R38] 2020/01/13 1. Fixed external monitor attached on dock no display or light up slowly if connected through DP to DVI dongle(lenovo PN43N9159). VIA HUB : [Hub1 5543, Hub2 5544 ] 2020/1/3 1. Fixed external monitor attached on dock no display or light up slowly if connected through DP to DVI dongle(lenovo PN43N9159). 2. Fixed USB2 doesn’t functional intermittently when work with ThinkPad X280. 3. Fixed USB hub FW update failure while full loading when work with ThinkPad T480. |
I've done some more work on this....
Not a fix, but a workaround Went to Toshiba/Dynadock downloads for Toshiba drivers for PA3927A-1PRP https://support.dynabook.com/support...ext=1200014770 Latest driver there is 8.2 dated June 2017 Unplugged Dynadock Removed current driver 9.3 M1 Reboot Install Toshiba/Dynadock ver 8.2 driver Connect Dynadock Works and stable !!!! But ..... Windows update updated the driver to 9.2 and issues returned Removed 9.2 driver Re-Installed Toshiba/Dynadock 8.2 Now stable again So then prevented Windows driver updates : Control Panel. System and Security. Click System. Click Advanced system settings from the left sidebar. Select the Hardware tab. Press the Device Installation Settings button. Choose No, and then press the Save Changes button. So now driver 8.2 is locked in and stable Not a fix, but a workaround with a driver almost 3 years old I believe this clearly demonstrates a driver issue Toshiba / Dynadock / Displaylink Please investigate why drivers later than 8.2 are failing UPDATE: Now stable 10 days with Toshiba driver version 8.2 Compared to previously crashing multiple times a day Toshiba / Dynadock / Displaylink please respond |
Same problem here
Brand new HP Spectre x360 with Plugable UD-ULTC4K docking station.
Running Windows 10 with most recent 9.3M1 DL driver. Only have two monitors connected via DP -> HDMI, Ethernet, and USB-C to host. The docking station drivers are crashing multiple times a day with even ID 10110 and 10111, sometimes even crashing my laptop. These DisplayLink docking stations and drivers are quite disappointing compared to those I have owned in the past. Any solution yet, or are the DisplayLink and the manufacturers still pointing fingers at eacho other and/or ignoring the issue? |
They are ignoring. See my previous post. Basically I have proved this is a driver issue. The silence is deafening !
Have you tried my workaround ? Go to HP website for latest HP drivers. Install that driver, then prevent Windows driver updates. Worked for me ! |

Thanks tannum99 - I have just installed the driver you recommended to see if it helps resolve my issue as well. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and solution, especially given DisplayLink's lack of response and resolution of the issue.
I have been working with Plugable on this issue, and must say that their support has been great. They believe this issue is uncommon, but affects a number of DisplayLink-based docking stations with a few different DisplayLink chipsets. From what I understand, DisplayLink has been made aware of the issue but has not released a fix, and may basically be ignoring the issue because they don't consider it to be common enough to be a priority. For anyone else experiencing the issue, please help to escalate this by raising a fuss! For me, this driver crash occasionally causes my laptop to crash and reboot as well. I'll likely end up having to return my docking station, as losing work due to a crashing laptop is not acceptable. I have been using DisplayLink devices for probably 7 or 8 years now, and have upgraded as each new chipset has been released. I am disappointed that I am forced to backtrack to my older DisplayLink hardware, or to look for a more reliable multi-monitor solution now. Quote:

Hello,
I would like to apologize that we did not respond earlier on this topic. We have been checking forum threads, along with tickets, and received feedback on pre-release software that changes made in 9.3 M2 address some reports. We would like to take a closer look with as much data as possible right now at the remaining cases. If you would be so kind to gather and send advanced log files or attach them to your messages we would be very thankful. Here is the guide how to do it step by step: https://support.displaylink.com/know...to-displaylink Thank you for your patience. Best regards, Jakub |

Hello tannum99.
Thank you for this detailed description and log files. If you would like to transfer to the mail support please let me know. We would be having a better and faster communication over there than on the forum. In the log files I see many crash dumps of our driver but we do not have logs when the crash happened. Due to that we would need to have a new logs from the crashing driver version from you to correctly analyze the case. If you could please do the following: 1. Install the newest driver: https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/file?id=1566 2. In our support tool choose advanced logging (this setting is lost after uninstall/install) 3. Wait for the problem to re-occur 4. Gather the log files straight after the issue takes place 5. Send the logs here for us Sorry for this inconvenience but we won't be able to gather enough information from the previous logs. Thank you for your will to help us! Kind regards, Jakub |
