Dell D3000 fails to display on external monitors after disconnect

2 Attachment(s)
Every time I disconnect my laptop from the Dell™ SuperSpeed™ Dual Video USB 3.0 Docking Station (D3000) and reconnect the dual monitor setup does not work. I tried connecting my wireless mouse and keyboard to the D3000 and it works. Also, the ethernet port lights up but the computer does not recognize it as connected to the internet.

I have gone through this multiple times in the past and have been able to restore the functionality of the D3000 by restarting, unplugging, re-installing, driver updating, etc. previously but now I have been unable to get the D3000 to work.

I see it listed in the device manager however when I run the display link support tool it states "We could not detect a DisplayLink product connected to the PC." "Warning: Device not attached" but everything passes. The computer makes the device connected sound and device disconnected sound every time I plug/unplug it, which I have tried in each of the four USB ports. I have been working on this for over two hours -- any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before you ask:

I have

1. Disconnected the dock / adapter / monitor
2. Uninstalled DisplayLink Software
3. Run the cleaner tool from here: http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=297
4. Re-installed DisplayLink Software
5. Reconnected the dock / adapter / monitor

many times and it still doesn't work; including shutting down and restarting my laptop

I have

updated to the latest drivers 7.6M0 then uninstalled the software/drivers and tried all versions back to 6.3M1 (using the DisplayLink cleaner tool each time)

and none of them worked.

I have

given up trying to make it work and therefore included two logs (two hours apart) from the display link support tool for your perusal and advice.

Thank you for your time,

AB

Exchange the D3000

Targus is aware of a hardware issue that has recently been diagnosed with some older D3000 docks. This issue is most easily recognized in the Windows Device Manager where no USB Display Adapters and no dock Giga Ethernet Network adapters are present. It is also when neither of the dock’s display ports or Ethernet ports work at all. The issue is intermittent and temperature dependent over time, showing up mostly at colder temperatures. Manufacturing has produced at ECN for a workaround for all newly manufactured docks but for deployed units that exhibit the misbehavior, please contact Dell for a free exchange.

Dell tech support will not exchange

TargusLevel3:

Thank you for your quick reply!

I tried calling dell at your suggestion and they will not offer any help since the docking station is 4 months out of warranty. I tried to explain to the supervisor that I was unhappy with that answer and he was apologetic but did not offer any other options. I did not report the problems during the warranty period because I was able to get the docking station to work (seems reasonable to me).

The tech support technician and supervisor also claim that they are unaware of any hardware issues with the D3000.

I don't want to spend another $150 on a product that has failed and caused me so much stress and heartache. However, after a quick search for a new docking station, there does not seem to be many to choose from

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

AB

Ordered new Dell D3000 --- SAME PROBLEM!

I ordered a new dell D3000 docking station because I need the dual monitor setup for work. I have the exact same problem as above and conclude that it is not a hardware issue.

I don't understand why the displaylink tool does not recognize that the docking station is attached when the USB ports work.

Is there anyone who can help solve this problem?

The problem has to do with the displaylink drivers

1 Attachment(s)
Update:

Once the new driver version (7.6 M2) came out on 7-18-2014 both external monitor displays worked. Therefore the bullshit that targuslevel3 thought was a hardware issue was a complete lie and cost me because I bought another one of these pieces of garbage.

I once again disconnected my laptop and reconnected it and now I am back to square one where it fails to recognize and display on my external monitors. I tried upgrading to the 7.7 Beta 1 which did absolutely nothing. I have again tried all of the previous steps mentioned and have spent a couple hours of my time uninstalling, re-installing, and restarting.

I have never been so frustrated in my life!

I think the problem has to do with the drivers:

I have Generic Superspeed USB Hub and four occurrences (I'll call a-d) of "generic USB Hub" under the USB controllers heading in device manager.

Generic Superspeed USB Hub properties show has a location of Port_#0005.Hub_#0003 and driver provider is "Microsoft" and the date is "5/30/2014"

generic USB Hub "a" has a location of Port_#0001.Hub_#0003 and driver provider is "Microsoft" and the date is "5/30/2014"

generic USB Hub "b" has a location of Port_#0001.Hub_#0002 and driver provider is "Microsoft" and the date is "6/21/2006"

generic USB Hub "c" has a location of Port_#0004.Hub_#0005 and driver provider is "Microsoft" and the date is "5/30/2014"

generic USB Hub "d" has a location of Port_#0001.Hub_#0001 and driver provider is "Microsoft" and the date is "6/21/2006"

Now I am no expert but I am assuming that "Microsoft" and an eight year old date of "6/21/2006" is most likely the problem. I have tried updating using the search automatically and the browse my computer options with no luck.

Displaylink needs to be advised of this problem and release an immediate fix!

Hi,

Can you try the following:

1. Disconnect your dock's USB cable from your PC
2. Disconnect your dock's power cable from the dock
3. Reconnect your dock's power cable to the dock
4. Reconnect your dock's USB cable to your PC

Thanks,
James

I have been fighting with this for a long time

I have been fighting with the problems noted above, off and on, since I purchased my Dell D3000, Mg: ACP075US, sn 1301003742 dock with my Dell XPS L421X in March 2013. I had a pretty good, problem free, run during the summer but now it's back with a vengeance. My second monitor will not display via the USB 3.0 D3000 dock. Argh. Help!

PS: Got my second monitor working using steps noted above but only after several attempts. Bizarre. Problem solved.... until tomorrow?

Dell 3000 also starting to fail on me

Hi,

Been a while since I was last here.

OK, I've seem to be having the same/similar problems as described above.
The connection on my dell3000 is not working, but after some on/off, replugging of usb cables it sometimes works.. but today it doesn't.
After following the last steps my ethernet connection seemed to be detected, but secondary monitor still is not there. Trying a reboot next.

This could well be a hardware problem and you could contact Dell or Targus about this.

40 minute battle this morning

Another 40 minute battle this morning to get the second monitor working. Power cycled dock and unplugged/plugged USB 10+ times. The third variable seems to be time. I read somewhere temperature may be a factor which kind of makes sense. I will never surrender! Never!

I think I've got a solution

The solution that seems to work is:
1. Plug in the Dell D3000 USB display dock to my lap top. Open up my lap top.
2. No display on second monitor.
3. Work on my lap top with only the lap top display for 15 minutes.
4. Unplug the Dell D3000 display dock power for 10 seconds.
5. Second monitor now displays.
6. Contemplate for 10 minutes why it took me so darn long to figure this out.

Definitely software issues

I can confirm that the "one monitor not working" problem is a driver related issue. It happened to me today, despite making no intentional changes to the driver software or windows. I happen to have access to 6 different Dell D3000 DisplayLink hubs -- all acting exactly the same way on only my Dell Precision M3800, but working correctly on other identical laptops in the office. When connected to my machine, each has failed video on one of the two video ports. What's interesting is that when the hub is disconnected and one is plugged in, the second fails.....repeat the process plugging the second device in first, and the other device fails. I've rebooted multiple times, uninstalled and reinstalled software completely, no matter what, I can't beat this problem.

Let's chalk it up to a bad release on DisplayLink's side. Hopefully they get their act together and put out a product driver that actually works for a change.

Same problem

A have remarkably similar problem with ACP70EU connected to a Dell XPS13. It used to work, but now the dock simply refuses to admit to the existence of the attached screens and internet connection. Oddly it does still connect the keyboard and mouse via its USB ports. Have tried DisplayLink's usual suggestions of power cycling/disconnecting/updating software etc but none of this makes any difference at all. There seems to be a serious issue at the heart of this, which DisplayLink seem reluctant to acknowledge.

Item Number Please

Guy,
What is the Item number (shown on the bottom of the dock)?

Same problem as bpeterson76

Hello,

I also have a Dell M3800 connected to DisplayLink Superspeed USB 3.0 docking station and have the same problem of being unable to display on two external screens.

I bought my computer and the docking station in May 2014. I connected two external screens to the docking station, one through HDMI and the other through the VGA/DVI adaptator. Everything first worked well but in July, I lost the display on the two external screens as well as the ethernet connection through the docking station. Only the USB ports were working.

Dell changed the docking station under guarantee. Less than one year later, I got the problem again but as I was in North America for several months, I couldn't obtain a new replacement of the docking station.

I called Dell last week. They first suggested me to update the driver but it didn't solve the issue. They then suspected a problem with the OS (Windows 8.1) and suggested me to reinstall it. As I use my computer professionally, I don't have 3 days to loose to reinstall all my softwares. In addition, there is no guarantee that this will bring a stable solution.

I cannot understand why the problem is with the computer and not with the docking station or its driver.

Could someone please help me find a solution?

Thank you !

Definitiely a temperature problem

Me again. Dell D3000 dock worked great all summer. Once the weather cooled off a bit, Dell D3000 will not display to my second monitor when I get to work in the morning. The solution is to:

1. Work with only the laptop monitor for the first hour in the morning until the dock warms up.
2. Then power cycle the Dell D3000 dock.
3. Wait for the second monitor to display.
4. Reboot my laptop.
I guess my Dell D3000 dock just doesn't like fully waking up on cold mornings. Perhaps I will procure a new dock one day. Perhaps I will retire to a desert inland with no computers.
My new problem is to get a monitor working with a DisplayPort cable. DVI works! HDMI works! DisplayPort NFW! I'm too old for this.

Same problem - any solution yet???

Same problem here, using a Dell XPS and DisplayLink Superspeed USB 3.0 docking station.

It worked for me for a couple of days but after last Window update not working. Tried everything to fix it but no luck this time.

Really annoying that so many of you have experienced the same issue but it hasnt been resolved yet.

Cgarciaarano 11-12-2016 03:59 PM

Hi, same problem here.

I think I have resolved it so far. I had the docking station plugged to a faulty power strip. I noticed that when I put the plug in the socket sometimes there were sparks.

I have changed the power strip and it's been working for a while. So, check your power setup, it seems the docking station is pretty sensitive with it.

If you have hardware issues, may I recommend you flag this to Dell who makes the hardware?
Unfortunately, there is not much we can do on the software or at chip level for that...

Kind regards,
Alban
