Issues with Zoom Screen Sharing
2 Attachment(s)
Ever since I updated to a certain version of macOS Sonoma, I have had issues with my external displays freezing while sharing my screen. I have gone to what seems like the end of the world to prevent this including the following:
1. Restart my computer 2. Fresh install of Zoom 3. Update my DisplayLink Manager to the latest version 4. Turn off hardware acceleration in Zoom settings I have a Plugable dock that is connected to 2 external displays via HDMI. I have attached some of my system information to see if anyone else notices something I haven't. Attachment 4471 Attachment 4472 |
Having the same issue
I'm on Sonoma 14.3.1 and Zoom 5.17.11
I have 2 monitors plugged in and use my computer in clamshell mode. Typically within ~5 minutes of sharing my Chrome window over zoom, both external monitors freeze (not just the chrome window but entire monitor). |
Having the same issue - computer freezing while on zoom

Same issue
Experienced it twice since updating Zoom yesterday. Both monitors freeze while sharing my screen on Zoom.
|
My screen freezes too. I have to disconnect from my external monitors completely in order to share my screen.
I've downloaded version 1.9 to see if that fixes things. |
I wrote into support on Friday; will keep this thread updated if/when they get back to me
|
I'm experiencing the same issue and have posted in the Zoom support forum here: https://community.zoom.com/t5/Meetin...cOS/m-p/172288
I believe this started with Zoom version 5.17.10, which included Sonoma-specific features. |
I and my coworker are having the exact same issue. It was happening before I upgraded to MacOS 14.4.1, but I am now currently using the latest version of the MacOS, DisplayLink, and Zoom.
Sharing via Teams doesn't have this issue. If I plug one monitor directly into my M1 MacBook Pro it does not freeze. With the hub plugged in as well, only the monitor on the hub freezes. This is definitely related to DisplayLink and its interactions with Zoom. |

Hello, Can you please share more details I will need logfiles to check the feedback from the driver. For instructions on how to gather the logfiles please navigate to the following article How to report macOS issues to DisplayLink And aslo for speedy support please send an email with the logfiles and detailed problem description to: technical-enquiries@synaptics.com __________________ |
Support was super helpful and resolved the issue via the steps below:
1. Please download the DisplayLink Support Tool available here 2. Disconnect your docking station from your computer 3. Run the DisplayLink Support Tool. 4. Then select Advanced in the left top corner of your top menu bar and once expanded, select Reset Screen Layout 5. Then restart the machine, connect dock again and check if you still have the freeze issues. |
I am having the same issue. Unfortunately the steps posted by amgz5 did not work for me. I am going to create a support case as well.
|
I sent an email to technical-enquiries@synaptics.com about this, but I was able to get a crash report in the Console of a process called replayd which is responsible for screen recording. I sent the log in.
I also have been able to trigger this issue at will by manually killing the replayd process from the terminal while screen sharing in Zoom. Quitting the DisplayLink Manager software (from the system bar on my laptop screen while locked up) then reopening makes the screens start working again. I'm looking into a way to restart DisplayLink Manager in a quicker manner until we have a proper fix. I'm also keeping up with this issue on the Zoom board here: https://community.zoom.com/t5/Meetin...cOS/m-p/172288 |
I have also been experiencing this in for multiple users in our environment. I am testing the instructions from amgz5 to see if it will resolve.
I, however, have also seen the issue in Slack Huddles when screen sharing. Typically, I will only be able to screen share for no more than a minute or two without my screens freezing. After following the steps from amgz5 I have been on a Zoom screen share for ~10 mins. Hopefully, this is the fix.... |
Well, issue is back. I have pulled the crash logs and Zoom logs and opening a ticket with Zoom.

Latest instructions
I just received (via email support) these latest instructions. It looks similar to the manual instructions posted already in this thread. Other than, a new driver. I just went through these steps myself, so too early to determine if it works. Sharing nonetheless.
Download DisplayLink Installation Cleaner for macOS. https://support.displaylink.com/know...tool-for-macos https://www.synaptics.com/products/d...lation-cleaner Run End-User Cleaner tool. Select actions to be performed by the End-User Cleaner tool. All actions are enabled by default to fully clean the workstation. The actions are described further in this paragraph. Click "Clean" button. A system prompt will appear, requesting the user to provide password. Please provide the password. End-User Cleaner tool will proceed with the cleaning. This may take up to few minutes. Depending on selected options a restart can be or be not needed. If it is not required, the tool can be closed by clicking "OK" button. I restart is required, tool displays the "Restart" button instead. To complete the cleaning process, please click the "Restart" button to reboot the system. Download and install this version of the driver : https://www.synaptics.com/products/d...9?filetype=exe |
So far so good
It's been less than a week. I've been on zoom, screensharing several times. So far, so good, with the instructions posted above.

I also used the web version of the Zoom client temporarily as a viable workaround. |
This Zoom sharing freeze issue has absolutely been driving me up the wall. . . Just followed the instructions to clean and reinstall 1.9. Fingers crossed that works, will try to remember to repost back here next week

This is solved!

I wanted to post an update since it's been over a week. . .
Good News: 1.9 seems to work great, no lockups when sharing screen. Bad News: Corporate IT device management keeps forcing an update to DisplayLink 1.10 anytime I reboot, which is a total pain. I've asked for an exception . . . |
Didn't fix
I tried this and everything else and I still have issues.

Hey all! I found a temporary fix that has been working for me for the past bit.
In the Zoom desktop app, go to Settings -> Share Screen -> Advanced (at bottom) -> Screen Capture Mode -> Select "Advanced capture with window filtering". This switches Zoom to use the native screen sharing built into recent versions of Sonoma rather than the Zoom-specific screen sharing built into the app. It's a bit of a different experience but it works! I also enabled ac System Picker here, but the problem seemed fixed before I did that just changing to "Advanced capture with Window filtering" YMMV Here is a Zoom forum mentioning this solution as well. https://community.zoom.com/t5/Meetin...cOS/m-p/172288 Looking forward to a better fix from DisplayLink, but at least this is a not-too-annoying bandaid. |
