Hi folks,

My goal is to get setup with two monitors. I already have one working via HDMI cable directly from the HDMI out on the laptop. There is only one HDMI out. Was hoping to get another one working with a spare USB output.

I have this laptop running ubuntu 18.04 LTS:

$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Release: 18.04
Codename: bionic

$ sudo dmidecode -t1
# dmidecode 3.1
Getting SMBIOS data from sysfs.
SMBIOS 2.8 present.

Handle 0x0001, DMI type 1, 27 bytes
System Information
Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
Product Name: Latitude E7450
Version: Not Specified
Wake-up Type: Power Switch
SKU Number: 062E
Family: Not Specified

And I recently bought this adapter because in the comments section someone said it was compatible with ubuntu 18.04
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DWXWW63

I downloaded displaylink-driver-5.2.14.run from here:
https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/ubuntu

And followed instructions here to install it:
https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/684649-how-to-install-displaylink-software-on-legacy-ubun

The install ran without error.

However the monitor the adapter is plugged into gets no signal. It shows a dialog saying no signal then goes black.

I am not a hardware expert so would be very grateful for tips! did I buy the wrong adapter?

Thanks!

Jesse

I solved this by getting a DisplayPort to HDMI cable. Didn't realize that DisplayPort was a thing. Should have got that to begin with!
