Seems like the issue is bigger than displayLink.

It is a very specific issue that appears to be a bug in Snow Leopard. It affects only 2010 MBPs with dual graphics when configured to use an external display as Main Monitor, but with that external display not connected, while using a virtual frame buffer that is off line. (Very specific.)
So, bottom line for anyone with a mid-2010 macbook pro is to make sure to transfer your menu bar to the MBP LCD before disconnecting any external monitors.
Since so far has worked for me...
