View Full Version : 10-second delay launched "Metro" apps

When the latest DisplayLink drivers are installed on my computer, all "Metro"-style Windows 8 apps have a long startup delay. Removing the driver restores normal startup time.

Clicking the tile displays the solid-color screen with the large app icon, but the "busy" animation that normally shows beneath the icon does not appear for 7-12 seconds. Once the busy animation appears, the app typically shows its main screen within 0.5-2 seconds.

This weekend, I reinstalled Windows 8 and all apps three times to isolate this. It is the driver and nothing else. (I had suspected group policy for our domain, Hyper-V, and a few other things, but they aren't it.)

I'm having this same issue. if i uninstall 7.1 drivers i no longer have the 12 sec lag opening the metro style apps. Please let us know when there is a fix for this. I'm running windows 8 pro on a dell xps 12.

If the 7.1 drivers, which are very new, have the 12-second Metro delay, are older drivers available that do not have this delay? If so, where can we find them to test against the Metro delay problem?

Forgot to mention the this issue is happening even when you're not plugged into the displaylink device. As long as the driver is install you have this delay.

True. I just tried the older Lenovo-provided firmware and drivers (likely supplied to them by DisplayLink) and got the same launch delay. This at least means that the problem wasn't introduced with the newest code from last week.

Is this issue being addressed? This is very aggravating? It takes 20 sec to open the "metro" mail app with the driver installed. it takes 2 sec if i uninstall the displaylink driver.

We're trying to reproduce this. To help can you tell us what PC system specs you have to see if there is some correlation with the GPU?

I'm experience the same delayed Modern/Metro app launching issue, this is from a Surface Pro 128GB. I have attached diag as well.

the surface pro and the dell xps 12 both use the intel HD Graphics 4000 video card

My computer is also running the Intel HD Graphics 4000.
Driver version 9.17.10.2932 (dated 12/12/12).

Wim, what additional information do you want and how can I collect it easily?

Interesting, my post to this thread last night never showed up. Anyway, I'm using a Surface Pro and having the exact same problem as described here. I tested it by uninstalling the DisplayLink software and the Modern UI apps went back to normal, then I reinstalled DisplayLink and they are extremely slow to load again.

I am also having the same issue.....using a Dell 6430u with HD4000 graphics adapter....driver ver. 9.17.10.2932 dated 12/12/12.

In addition, I also experience a mouse freezing issue for about 1-2 seconds intermittently.

Did some troubleshooting last night on my Surface Pro 128, and traced the Metro app delay to just having the Display Link software installed. Was relieved to see it's not just me. Hoping for a fix soon!

OK - We have reproduced and now investigating why this happens...

Any progress on this? I know it's only been about a week, but I find myself constantly removing and reinstalling the software because of the huge performance impact. Thanks!

Good news! I found a work-around that does the trick [here (http://www.eightforums.com/performance-maintenance/17782-faster-metro-app-start-times.html)].

Here is what it says:

After some more testing I discovered that changing IE 10's Advanced settings to Enable Software Rendering (instead of GPU rendering) made the metro apps load in ~2 seconds! Great! But now my CPU is being consumed doing the display rendering, eating up more battery.

I then recalled that the USB 3.0 docking station I was testing installed a DisplayLink display driver when I set it up originally. So on a hunch, I uninstalled the DisplayLink software and driver (from Add/Remove programs), disabled Software Rendering in IE 10 and rebooted.

And it worked! Metro Apps now load fast! It's a much different experience. So the USB 3.0 docking station driver was at fault. Hope this helps anyone else having a similar issue.

Note: Go to: Internet Options >> Advanced Tab >> Accelerated Graphics topic (1st one) >> Select Use Software Rendering instead of GPU* (*requires restart)

In my case (Surface Pro), I simply changed the Internet Setting above, and kept the DisplayLink drivers intact, and it all works. The change in CPU usage seems minimal to me (looking at the Task Manager Performance screen). At least this will keep me going until a permanent fix comes from the DisplayLink folks (can't wait).

Cheers!

This has helped a lot, thanks! I'll keep an eye out for any other changes it may have made, but this at least makes my computer usable again.

Thanks for the work around. Works on the dell xps 12 also.

I have been randomly encountering network issues (in addition to slow start screen apps/mouse hangs) on my Win 8 laptop using the DisplayLink Drivers/USB 3.0 dock. It will usually occur anytime I do a large file transfer to a network drive. Upon doing this, my network connection will completely drop and I have to disconnect the dock from the laptop and reconnect it. Has anyone encountered this?

They keep telling me i need to try and update my video driver, but i have the latest one issued from dell for my laptop.

We have a fix for the 10 second delay when opening apps. This will be in 7.2.

We're also updating the Ethernet driver to be more performant. During the development of this a few bugs have been discovered and fixed that could cause issues. Hopefully the Ethernet in 7.2, released at the end of the month will eliminate these issues. Testing internally so far is going well.

Thank you!! I have a surface pro and was having the same issue....figured out it was displaylink and found your post and fixed! Will wait for the official fix, but this just kept me from returning my dynadock I bought.
