software and hardware installed properly, it seemed, but DisplayLink Icon does not appear on taskbar (and yes, I checked the Hidden Icons)

Anything in device manager? If you can attach the zipped up contents of \Program Files\DisplayLink Core Software\Debug that would help to diagnose. Also, if you can state the product name and type of connection that would help too.
