A reply from the usb to hdmi adapter website.. gave me information on how to change the default audio in control panel to either the laptop or the tv.
that is better than unplugging the adapter......

Using the ST Lab usb to hdmi adapter with Windows 7, my laptop and 55 inch Sony in different rooms one upstairs and one downstairs. (30 foot cable)
First.. I love it. Works good.. minor freeze here...
