Blank screen with Dell XPS 13 and D3100 on Mint with 1.3.52

Hi,

I've previously been able to use an external monitor:
  • Dell XPS 13 9350
  • I'm not sure which driver, but it was around Aug-Oct 2016.
  • Mint Sarah (18) Cinnamon (derived from Ubuntu 16.04)
  • The monitor was connected HDMI-HDMI (not sure if that matters).

Current setup:
  • Same machine
  • Mint Serena (18.1) Cinnamon (derived from Ubuntu 16.04)
  • 1.3.52
  • The monitor is connected HDMI-DVI.
I've tried two monitors and two HDMI-DVI cables.

I can see the monitor in display management and it looks active. However the screen itself remains blank. I can move the mouse off the main screen, but the pointer does not show up on the blank screen. (Also the blank screen is not the same as the monitor's no signal screen.) Usually if I play around with the settings enough (eg. switching primary, or turning external off/on) I can cause something to crash: the primary screen looks a bit weird (I think you start to see the edge of the other screen), the mouse pointer works, but other than that the screen's static and unresponsive. I can switch to TTY1 and run service mdm restart and everything looks normal again and works (apart from the external screen!).

The attached zip file occurred after trying to switch off the external display, which caused the problem described above requiring a restart of mdm.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information, thanks.

It's linked to DVI

I've had a chance to try with a different monitor, and the display worked with both HDMI and DisplayPort.
