[Ubuntu 16.10] Possilbe fix for laggy/bad performing second monitor

Hi all,

So i recently updated to/freshly installed Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 on my laptop and could not run my secondary monitor (Asus MB168B+) due to the "1fps bug" or whatever you want to call it. It might be that this is due to wrong VSync settings, which think that the display only has a refresh rate of, well, 1fps. As a workaround you can simply disable VSync for the Intel drivers. So:

This is what I did to solve the issue:

Go to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d or create the folder if it does not exist.

If you see any *intel.conf file edit it, otherwise create the file "20-intel.conf"
  • If you created the file:
    Copy, paste and save this:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "VSync" "false"
    EndSection
  • If the file (or similar file) already existed
Add this line before "EndSection" and safe
    Option "VSync" "false"

Reboot the machine.

After doing that, my Laptop uses my display like in the good old 16.04 times.

DISCLAIMER: I do not consider myself a Linux Guru or anything like that so I think it is sheer luck that I discovered that fix and it might break other stuff! So be careful with what you are doing!

This fix also might only helped me with my machine so here are my specs:
  • Intel i5-4210U (HD Graphics 4400)
  • NVIDIA GForce 840M
  • PRIME set to Intel Graphics
  • Driver version 367.57
