How to determine the specific chipset used?

Hello,

Is there a generic way to find out the chipset used in any/all DisplayLink devices?

I'm wondering if by knowing the chipset I'd be able to determine the driver I need.

I have a Mimo UM-710S that I'm trying to get running on my Mac OS X 10.7.5 and a Fedora 18 32-bit PC (kernel 3.6.10-4.fc18.i686). I don't want/need it to work with X Windows, just want to have it be a detected frame buffer so i can schlep bitmap graphics out to it like this http://tinyurl.com/pbr36jl and this http://tinyurl.com/nmqad99

The Mac and FC18 both see "something" with a USB identifier of 17e9:0040 but never load a driver and I never see a /dev/fb* show up. No green screen, just a gray one (or "black with backlight"?).
